Manager, Mobile Arts Program

Edible Teaching Garden & Culinary Arts Program


Under the direction of the Curator of Education, the Manager of the Mobile Arts Program will develop and facilitate a mobile teaching curriculum in local communities. This three-year grant-funded mobile program will bring hands-on experiences to local communities that inspire children and families to explore urban gardening, healthy eating, food history, and the process of garden-to-table. The Manager of the Mobile Arts Program will plan, coordinate, and facilitate K-12 grade garden and culinary education workshops at offsite locations.


The Manager will develop a standards-based curriculum with teaching objectives, corresponding learning outcomes, and student assessment. This position also entails working closely with the Mobile Arts Assistant to execute a robust community engagement calendar. The Manager will also be responsible for drafting narratives, budgets, grant reports, and collecting and interpreting program data.


Candidates should hold a master gardener certificate and/or a background in culinary arts, as well as prior K-12 teaching experience.


Job Duties & Responsibilities

The Manager of the Mobile Arts Program will manage the implementation of the mobile garden and culinary initiative, including the following:


1. Create K-12 lesson plans with a focus on student-center dialogue and cultural history as it relates to LA Plaza’s mission, education department goals, and grant objectives. Utilize a variety of instructional techniques and strategies, with an emphasis on hands-on explorations.

2. Oversee program budget, managing supplies and inventory, and coordinating a comprehensive community engagement plan that works with target audiences.

3. Facilitate hands-on experiences with a focus on exploration and discovery in various community sites including: libraries, parks, community centers, schools, and community festivals. Utilize a variety of teaching methods and learning modes for both individual and small group instruction; including students with special needs.

4. Collect and interpret student and program data. Draft content for budgets, narratives, reports and grant applications.



The ideal candidate will be a passionate and energetic individual with the following abilities:

• K-12 teaching experience

• Certified Master Gardener or comparable education

• At minimum, a Bachelor’s degree in education, environmental studies, history, arts education, or related field and 1-2 years’ equivalent experience in informal teaching and educational programs.

• Interest in food history and the process of garden-to-table • Excellent public speaking skills with individual and large group audiences • Must demonstrate cultural knowledge and sensitivity.

• Bilingual oral and written communication (English & Spanish)

• Familiarity with Mexican and Mexican American culture and ethnic diversity of Los Angeles

• Proficient in MS Office applications and familiar with database programs

• Ability to work as part of a team

• Ability to work outdoors

• Successfully pass background security check

• Able to travel to and from community sites using business vehicle

• Valid California driver license, reliable transportation, and automobile insurance are required

• Available to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends (as needed)


Physical Demands

• Ability to carry up to 30 pounds

• Must be able to stand for long periods of time



Salary starting at $40,000 with commensurate of experience.
