Workshops & Classes Launching in 2012

Art Workshops

In its inaugural year, LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes will launch an art workshop series, allowing students of all ages to engage in a journey of self-discovery in the visual arts as they learn about the contributions of Mexican and Mexican Americans in Southern California. Participants will experience the powerful process of creation, which encourages self-expression, communication, introspection, and transformation. Celebrated artists, artists-in-residence, and educators in a variety of artistic disciplines will lead the workshops. Media for the art workshops will include drawing, watercolors, oil-based pastels, painting en plein air, graphics, digital photography, and mixed media.

 

Classes will be offered for children ages 5–15, teens ages 16–19, and adults. Youth workshops (ages 5–15) are multigenerational family workshops that require the participation of a guardian over age 21 (a ratio of one adult to four children).

 

Culinary Arts Workshops

 Culinary Arts workshops at LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes are designed to satisfy all aficionados of Mexican cuisine, from children to retired epicures. The workshops both reaffirm traditional Mexican culinary techniques and practices and explore new trends in the culinary arts.

 

Children ages 5–15 discover how to create healthful and nutritious meals learn to cook with whole food. Youth workshops (ages 5–15) are multigenerational family workshops that require the participation of a guardian over age 21 (a ratio of one adult to four children). Culinary Arts workshops for teens ages 16–19 teach life skills such as understanding nutrition, smart food shopping, and sanitary food preparation, as well as cooking.

 

Garden Workshops

 Get your hands dirty! LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes’ Edible Garden offers a unique urban experience. People of all ages are invited to participate in workshops on composting, seed germination, patio and sidewalk gardens, and pruning and harvesting techniques.

 

Classes are offered for children ages 5–15, teens ages 16–19, and adults. Youth workshops (ages 5–15) are multigenerational family workshops that require the participation of a guardian over age 21 (a ratio of one adult to four children).

 

Music Workshops

LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes celebrates the unique sounds that emanate from a rich cultural past, in addition to new sounds that have emerged within American culture. Music workshops focus on stringed instruments, music appreciation, and lyric writing.

Humanities Workshops

LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes embraces and promotes the contributions of Mexicans and Mexican Americans by celebrating the literary excellence of established writers and speakers to applauding the emerging artists from Southern California. LA Plaza also provides workshops for all ages, which vary each quarter. These and hands-on experiences will explore prose and poetry writing, public speaking, art history, and history.
