Grand Opening of “Abuelita’s Kitchen: Mexican Food Stories” at LA Plaza Cocina

LA Plaza Cocina will open its doors, in downtown L.A., on Sunday, May 22 from 12pm to 4pm for its second exhibition, “Abuelita’s Kitchen: Mexican Food Stories.”
This multimedia exhibition, led by USC professor Sarah Portnoy, shares the food stories of ten Indigenous, mestiza, Mexican-American, and Afro-Mexican grandmothers, or abuelas, in Los Angeles through photography, text, a documentary film, kitchen artifacts, family recipes, and audio stories. The exhibition examines food, identity, place, and culture, showing how these abuelas preserve traditions for future generations.
Rachel Aguilar, Yolanda Baza, Elsa Chan, Ana Guzman, María Elena Lorenzo-Linares, Margarita Nevarez, Consuelo Perez, Norma Luz Rodríguez, and Merced Sanchez are the abuelas that share their personal journeys as well as their knowledge about traditional dishes.
LA Plaza Cocina is at 555 North Spring Street, in LA Plaza Village. LA Cocina is open Wednesday through Sunday, 12pm to 5pm.
The exhibition closes on September 4, 2022.
