Plática: The African Influence in Latin American Music
From the 1500s to the present, African music has shaped and formed every other Latin American music genre. From Cumbia to Afro-Peruvian music, from Son Jarocho to Son Cubano, African rhythms have made Latin Americans dance to the beat of life. Participants will learn the contributions of African rhythms and listen to an impromptu music session at the end of the evening. Guest Speaker: Betto Arcos, independent radio journalist for NPR, BBC, and KPCC. Guest Musicians: César Castro: requinto jarocho, Angelo Salazar: guitarra acústica, and Eduardo Martínez: tambor alegre, tambor llamador & gaitas. Co-presented by CAAM in conjunction with "afroLAtinindad: mi casa, my city."
