Sembrando Cultura y Nutrición

LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes serves the public by providing educational experiences through public programming and exhibitions that celebrate the rich cultural heritage of Mexicans, Mexican Americans and all Latinos in Southern California.

LA Plaza opened to the public in 2011 in two renovated buildings located in the downtown Los Angeles historic core. Established by the County of Los Angeles, LA Plaza operates as a non-profit organization governed by a board of directors and is partially funded through the County’s cultural arts program. LA Plaza is a Smithsonian affiliate museum.

LA Troka: Sembrando Cultura y Nutrición is a mobile education program that promotes health and nutrition, engages students in explorations of Mesoamerica, and encourages students to connect to their cultural heritage. Through hands-on garden, culinary, art, and history activities, LA Troka empowers students to make healthy food choices and inspires students to prepare healthy foods at home, while making cultural connections.

Under the direction of the Curator of Education and the Program Manager, the Assistant of LA Troka will assist with every aspect of program implementation. The Assistant will work collaboratively with the program manager to plan, coordinate, and facilitate K-12 grade workshops at offsite locations during school, afterschool, and weekend hours.

Duties for this position include: loading and unloading the mobile unit for K-12 grade student workshops; organizing and cleaning equipment, supplies, and program vehicle; and facilitating hands-on standards-based workshops. The Assistant will also assist with data collection, ordering supplies, and managing inventory. The two program employees will execute a robust community engagement calendar at various sites throughout the year.

Candidates should have prior K-12 grade teaching experience and familiarity with Mesoamerican and indigenous history, art, and culture.


The Assistant will provide support to all areas of the LA Troka: Sembrando Cultura y Nutrición program, including the following:

1. Assist with drafting K-12 grade lesson plans that complement the program mission and grant objectives. Ability to create and implement lessons grounded in California State Content Standards, and Visual and Performing Arts Standards.

2. Facilitate hands-on workshops with a focus on inquiry-based exploration and discovery in various community sites including: libraries, afterschool programs, parks, community centers, schools, and community festivals. Utilize a variety of teaching methods and learning modes for both individual and small group instruction; including students with special needs. Facilitates an atmosphere of creative learning by engaging students and families with program and organization mission.

3. Maintain a good driving record and hold a valid Class C Driver License in order to operate and drive large business vehicle. Work collaboratively to maintain the upkeep of program vehicle.

4. Work collaboratively to set up and break down mobile unit for K-12 grade student workshops: organize, clean, and maintain equipment, supplies, program vehicle, and storage areas. Coordinate quarterly maintenance of program vehicle.

5. Assist with managing supplies and inventory, processing orders, updating budget, collecting and interpreting student and program data.

6. Develop rapport and build relationships with school sites, community centers, afterschool programs, libraries, nonprofit partners, parents, families, and site coordinators. Coordinate a comprehensive community engagement plan and calendar that works with target audiences.

7. Comply with all policies and standards as outlined by: LA Plaza’s Employee Handbook, Education Department, participating sites (including school district and county), as well as general sanitary and safety protocols. Exercises professional and sound judgment in making critical decisions in order to ensure the quality of work meets expected standards.

8. Open to flexibility as it relates to program design and implementation, actively assesses efficiency and effectiveness to promote program development. Ability to prioritize department, program, and multiple grant deadlines and multitask.

9. Assist with the Edible Teaching Garden and Culinary Arts Program: co-teach workshops, regularly assist with maintenance of Edible Teaching Garden, and fill-in for program instructors as needed.

10. Be an active and integral team member in the Education Department. Perform other duties as assigned and provide support to other Education Department programs, including: Guided School Tours and Workshops, Family Days, and Teacher Training Sessions.

11. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, students, and the public and demonstrate tact and professionalism. Ability to conduct oneself in a manner appropriate to an educational institution that provides services to teachers, students, and families.


The ideal candidate will be a passionate and energetic individual with the following abilities:

• Experience working with K-12 grade students and a passion for working with children and families
• At minimum, a Bachelor’s degree in education, history, anthropology, arts education or related field and 1-2 years’ equivalent experience in teaching and educational programs
• Interest in food history; urban gardening; and Mesoamerican history, art, and culture
• Excellent outdoor public speaking skills with individual and large group audiences.
• Bilingual oral and written communication (English & Spanish)
• Must demonstrate cultural knowledge and sensitivity
• Familiarity with Mexican and Mexican American culture and ethnic diversity of Los Angeles
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with team members in a dynamic, complex environment, organize time and workload effectively, and adapt to changing work priorities
• Proficient in MS Office applications, including Excel
• Ability to work outdoors
• Successfully pass background security check. Once hired, must be current with TB Testing and Live Scan Fingerprinting
• Maintain a good driving record, hold a valid Class C Drivers License, able to operate large business vehicle to and from community sites
• Current First Aid and CPR certification Work Environment Work is performed largely outdoors under a variety of weather conditions at offsite locations, including: school/community gardens, school grounds, libraries, community parks, community centers, and afterschool sites. Some administrative work and workshop preparation is performed onsite at LA Plaza.

Physical Requirements

This is a physical, fast-paced, outdoor position that involves frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, crouching, lifting, lowering, pulling, and carrying up to 30 pounds.

• Must be able to stand for long periods of time
• Ability to assist with all elements of set-up and breakdown for all pop-up workshops, including: loading/unloading and setting-up/breaking down tents, tables, and supplies Schedule This position is 40 hours per week.
• Schedule will vary throughout the week. Must be flexible and willing to accommodate requested work hours. Must be available Monday – Friday for frequent afterschool program hours, from 10:00am-6:30pm (with 30 minutes lunch), 11am-7:30pm (with 30 minutes lunch), or 12pm-8:30pm (with 30 minutes lunch)—depending on the site and distance from LA Plaza
• Must be available on select weekends throughout the year for LA Plaza’s Family Day Series and other community events Compensation $32,000 - $34,000 annually, non-exempt, hourly employee.
