Fiestas Patrias Family Day | Free

To kick off PST ART Community Hub activities at LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes, on Sunday, September 15, community partners will come together at LA Plaza to commemorate Fiestas Patrias Family Day. September 16 marks the beginning of the Mexican War of Independence, and Fiestas Patrias is among the most significant celebrations in Mexican and Mexican-American culture, providing families with an occasion to reaffirm their heritage and identity. Families will enjoy free workshops, and guest performers. Food and beverages will be available.

Workshops

Cyanotype Workshop with Las Fotos Project

Participants will learn about the early forms of printing images, the science of sun printing, and how this relates to modern photography. Participants will have the chance to experiment with pretreated cyanotype paper, creating their own sun prints with a mix of natural materials, special objects (brought from home), and Las Fotos Project photo negatives.

Zine Workshop: Art-O-Thon/Zine-O-Thon with Art Space HP

Participants will learn about various art-making techniques: screen printing, stamp making, watercolor, figure drawing, zine making and more all in one day through different booths/workshops led by SELA artists and facilitators. Zine-a-thon Community organizations and artists will come together to display their zines and merch and provide opportunities to make their own zines. 

The Land Sustains Us Beading Workshop with Meztli Projects

Adorn yourself with offerings from oak trees and the ocean. Participants will strand and bead a custom necklace made of nuts, beads, and seashells.

La Botanica del Barrio with Mujeres de Maíz

La Botanica del Barrio (meaning apothecary of the neighborhood in Spanish) is a rolling remedy and mobile medicine cart which focuses on sharing, making and documenting wellness ways for and by the people. Stop by the cart to learn, share, and make your own tea blend. This alterNative mobile medicine cart aims to educate, dialogue and document wellness remedies, recipes, plants and herb uses.

Bloom Between the Pages: Crafting Pressed Flower Bookmarks with Garden School Foundation

In this delightful workshop, participants will learn the art of creating charming, pressed flower bookmarks. Dive into the world of botanical beauty as we explore techniques for preserving delicate flowers and arranging them to adorn your favorite reds. Whether you are a seasoned crafter or new to the world of pressed flowers, this workshop promises to be a fun and creative experience for all. Come unleash your inner artist and add a touch of nature to your reading adventures! 

Ojo de Dios Workshop with Stay Gallery

This free workshop is designed for families and children to learn about and create their own Ojo de Dios, or “God’s Eye,” a traditional craft with origins in Mexico and the Huichol and Tepehuan cultures. Historically, these yarn weavings were made as protective symbols and expressions of spirituality. Participants will learn how to weave colorful yarn around wooden sticks to create their own Ojo de Dios to take home. This workshop provides both a cultural learning experience and a creative activity for all ages!

Unity Bracelets with Pacoima Beautiful

Using all recycled materials like terracotta, bone, recycled glass, spacers, or old face beads we will create unity bracelets. This ties into our EJ work in encouraging folks to repurpose materials to make something new and useful.

Robotics with Columbia Memorial Space Center

Participants will learn to code through play by connecting different robotic blocks. They’ll discover how each block is a piece of code that will make their robot move, spin, or make sounds!

Grabados y recuerdos with Tía Chucha Centro Cultural

A printing workshop celebrating roots and culture from all over Latin America and Los Angeles.

Neiya Arts  

Neiya Arts is a Contemporary Folklorico Dance Group based out of Carson, CA, founded in 2015 with the purpose of preserving and diffusing Mexican culture and traditions. Neiya Arts adds an element of history and storytelling, allowing students to understand the dance, and build appreciation. 

The Mariachi Conservatory 

The mission for The Mariachi Conservatory is to provide students an opportunity to learn the art form of mariachi music and develop an academic mariachi program. 

Las Marimbas Del Valle 

Las Marimbas Del Valle consists of eight members ranging in age from 17-23 years old, who began their journey together at a local parish in the San Gabriel Valley. With almost a decade of experience under their belts, many members have performed at various locations around the country. Their repertoire primarily includes Latin Cumbias and classics performed through the captivating sound of wood.
