In this class, we will delve into the concept of milpa system, exploring its significance within the urban landscape of Southern California. The discussion will focus on the reasons for establishing a milpa, emphasizing the preparation needed before planting begins. We will also examine the milpa’s connection to the four sacred elements and discuss essential principles regarding soil health and microclimates. Site analysis and planning will be key components of our sessions, where we’ll consider the importance of cardinal directions and their influence on the garden’s layout. Additionally, we will highlight the advantages of aligning gardening practices with moon phases and explore traditional indigenous milpa designs to enrich our understanding of this sustainable agricultural practice. Participants will also receive a garden kit consisting of a resource book, gloves, tools and seeds. The series will conclude with a free cooking experience in the garden in June. Special guest, Marlene Aguilar of Irekuarhikua.
