Join Elsa Flores Almaraz and curator Susana Smith Bautista as they lead us an online walkthrough of LA Plaza's newest exhibition:
The exhibition focuses on the various periods in the life and artistic career of renowned Chicano artist Carlos Almaraz (1941-1989) through sketch books, works on paper, and paintings. Artwork
The exhibition will include early black and white grid-like compositions in graphite on paper and abstract color grids in pastel from the late 1960s and early 1970s and a selection of the artist’s personal sketchbooks from his travels. Almaraz’s later figurative and freeway scenes from the late 1980s are included to demonstrate his artistic evolution.
The exhibition will include works that have not been exhibited for decades, including the recently restored mural on paper La Conquista (1972), two untitled spray paint murals from 1971, and the large, foreboding painting End of an Era (1986).
Paintings and black and white photographs by his wife Elsa Flores Almaraz from 1975 to 1981 will also be displayed in the exhibition.
