LA PLAZA DE CULTURA Y ARTES IS A COMMUNITY HUB

LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes is a PST ART Community Hubs taking part in Getty’s PST ART: Arts & Science Collide Southern California’s landmark arts event. LA Plaza is collaborating with community partners who work at the intersection of art and science to spotlight their important work and meaningful contributions to LA County. Over seven months, LA Plaza is presenting public programs co-developed and co-designed with these organizations, highlighting topics including food sovereignty, indigenous sciences, sustainable gardening, science exploration, self-expression through photography, and other art-making techniques including screen printing, stamp making, zine making, and more. In addition, LA Plaza will support the impact community partners make in their local school communities by awarding nine bus grants to local classrooms and by hosting a STEAM Educator Open House.

As part of this initiative, LA Plaza is presenting a two-part interactive exhibition centered on the theme of Art & Science Collide, CONEXIONES: Cultivating Community Action and Louis Verdad: TONÃNTZIN.  The two-part exhibition and programming will take place from September 13, 2024, to April 27, 2025.

WHAT IS PST ART?

PST ART is a groundbreaking cultural collaboration. Every five years, PST ART unites hundreds of artists around a single, electrifying theme at more than 60 exhibition spaces. While the theme is different each time, the heart of PST ART is always the distinctive cultural identity of Southern California, and the universal hunger for artistic and intellectual discovery. In a region famed for its films and theme parks, PST ART provides a different kind of gripping experience— and the most distinctively Southern Californian of all.

TWO-PART INTERACTIVE EXHIBITION

Exhibition Dates: September 14, 2024-April 27, 2025

A colorful poster for "Conexiones: Cultivating Community Action" features a central logo with a four-color circle and the text. Surrounding the logo are icons depicting a leaf, a hand with a device, a planet, a butterfly, a paint palette, a bird, a feather, a plant, and a sun.

"CONEXIONES: Cultivating Community Action"

CONEXIONES: Cultivating Community Action is a collaborative and informational meeting space for the community partners where members of the public, artists, and activists intersect with one another, create dialogue, exchange ideas, and build solutions for the future. Art, film, photography, creative writing, and oral histories will guide the storytelling inviting community members to share their own creative expressions through interactive stations.

"Louis Verdad: TONÁNTZIN"

Louis Verdad: TONÁNTZIN  features a commissioned artwork by Mexican-American fashion designer Louis Verdad, who built a 9-foot visage of the Mesoamerican goddess Tonántzin, a multimedia presentation of Mama Tierra, who greets the public with tales of duality, of creation and destruction, a telling of her shifting identity throughout history, and her call-to-action for environmental justice.

With atmospheric lighting and sound elements, this installation offers a powerful and contemplative space that invites the public to gather around the goddess-mother on meditation cushions to consider the meaning and reciprocal role our communities have as protectors and stewards of the Earth.

Fashion designer Louis Verdad’s studio is based in Los Angeles, and his designs have adorned celebrities such as Christina Aguilera, Madonna, Cate Blanchett, Cher, Paris Hilton, Halle Berry, Oprah Winfrey and others. Much of his style bridges fashion and sculpture, and he is currently developing new works that address his Mexican roots that embody and celebrate his cultura with historical and symbolic references. Tonántzin, is curated by LA Plaza’s Curatorial Department, and this is its debut in Los Angeles. The exhibition also documents, through film, Verdad’s artistic practice and the process of making the installation.

PROGRAMMING

LA Plaza, in collaboration with the community partners, is presenting a series of programs reflecting the Art and Science Collide theme.

To kick off PST ART Community Hub activities at LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes, on Sunday, September 15, community partners will come together at LA Plaza to commemorate Fiestas Patrias Family Day. Fiestas Patrias is among the most significant celebrations in Mexican and Mexican-American culture, providing families with an occasion to reaffirm their heritage and identity.

Additional activities include an Open Air Makers Market, artist activations, a book celebration, a Day of the Dead-themed community art market, a discussion on food sovereignty in Southern California urban landscapes, and more.

From September through December 2024, LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes PST ART Community Hub will support the impact our community partners make in their local school communities by granting nine bus grants to local classrooms. Each of the nine community partners will identify one K-12 school/classroom in their school community.  LA Plaza will grant each school one bus grant to visit LA Plaza for a guided exploration of the two-gallery exhibition. Community partners will guide their school through the exhibition and will facilitate an immersive STEAM workshop during the school visit.

Finally, on October 5, LA Plaza will collide in a vibrant celebration of innovation and learning with interactive workshops and hands-on activities that showcase adaptable lesson plans for the classroom during a STEAM Educator Open House. Teachers, students, and families are all welcome to join in the experience.
