CONEXIONES: Cultivating Community Action is a collaborative and informational exhibition and meeting space for nine community partners where members of the public, artists, and activists intersect with one another, create dialogue, exchange ideas, and build solutions for the future. Art, film, photography, creative writing, and oral histories guide the storytelling, inviting community members to share their own creative expressions through interactive stations.
LA Plaza is a PST ART Community Hub taking part in PST ART: Art & Science Collide, a landmark regional event presented by Getty that explores the intersections of art and science, both past and present. As a Community Hub, LA Plaza has partnered with nine organizations, or Community Hub Partners, and together created programming and two interactive exhibitions, CONEXIONES: Cultivating Community Action and Louis Verdad: TONÁNTZIN. In the CONEXIONES exhibition, each organizations’ work and vision are represented on the second floor.
LA Plaza community partners are Art Space HP, Columbia Memorial Space Center, Garden School Foundation, Las Fotos Project, Meztli Projects, Mujeres de Maíz, Pacoima Beautiful, Stay Gallery, and Tía Chucha’s Centro Cultural & Bookstore.
Connecting Cities, Empowering Communities
This gallery features a commissioned mural painted by artist Eduardo Viramontes showing the locations of the nine LA Plaza PST ART community hub partners across Los Angeles County. Eduardo Viramontes is an Art Director, illustrator, and lettering artist based in Southern California. Driven by the hum of Los Angeles’ artistic atmosphere, he creates and explores visual communication through experimental letterforms, brand development, and editorial design. As an artist, he has dabbled in drawing, painting, photography, and graphic design—but his true skills lie in cooking up a hearty plate of breakfast and picking out the best places in the city for ramen.
LA Plaza’s cultural hub exhibition is led by LA Plaza’s Curatorial, Engagement and Outreach Departments:
- Karen Crews Hendon, Director of Exhibitions and Senior Curator
- Esperanza Sánchez, Associate Curator
- Carolyn Lopez, Exhibition Manager and Registrar
- Tom Rosenquist, Senior Preparator
- Armando Rodríguez, Engagement Manager, Community Initiatives
- Alondra Virrey, Engagement Manager, Visitor Experiences
This exhibition is presented in conjunction with LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes Community Hub activities included in Getty’s PST ART: Art & Science Collide Southern California’s landmark arts event.
WHAT IS PST ART?
PST ART is a groundbreaking cultural collaboration. Every five years, PST ART unites hundreds of artists around a single, electrifying theme at more than 60 exhibition spaces. While the theme is different each time, the heart of PST ART is always the distinctive cultural identity of Southern California, and the universal hunger for artistic and intellectual discovery. In a region famed for its films and theme parks, PST ART provides a different kind of gripping experience— and the most distinctively Southern Californian of all.
