During one week in 1968, ten thousand East Los Angeles high school students walked out of class. Protesting unequal conditions in their schools, they ignited a movement. In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the East Los Angeles walkouts, ¡Ya Basta! brings the story of this important moment in the history of civil rights to a new generation of students. The exhibition examines the conditions in Southern California schools that led to widespread protests; the courageous actions taken by students, teachers, and community members despite backlash and repression; and the walkouts’ legacy of resistance—which persists today. Through historical photographs, memorabilia, protest art, music, film footage, and more, ¡Ya Basta! challenges visitors to stand up against injustice and create change.
