LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes Kicks Off its Summer of Salsa Concert Series on May 10 with Rumbankete featuring Super DJ Robby

The crowd-favorite summer program welcomes hundreds of Angelenos to LA Plaza to dance to the vibrant rhythms of salsa. Taking place one Friday each month from May-September, it also features  Gabrielito y La Verdad, Son Mayor, Son Mirón, and Club Mambi 

LOS ANGELES (April 25, 2024) LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes, the iconic museum and cultural center in downtown Los Angeles, is thrilled to announce the kick-off of its Summer of Salsa concert series, featuring the high-energy salsa band Rumbankete, with special guest Super DJ Robby.  

LA Plaza’s Summer of Salsa Concert Series has brought together families, dance lovers and the diverse communities of Los Angeles County since 2015. The free program is presented in collaboration with Mesa Pacific and El Proyecto Barrio. 

“Summer of Salsa is a Friday night must-do in Los Angeles,” says Leticia Rhi Buckley, LA Plaza CEO. “It’s a perfect gathering spot for Angelenos looking for a fun and joyful experience. Whether you are the first on the dance floor or prefer to sit back and take it all in, Summer of Salsa has something for everyone. And it’s free!” 

Rumbankete, founded in 2004 by a collective of the Los Angeles’ prominent salsa musicians, has earned a reputation as one of the West Coast’s most exciting and progressive dance orchestras. Dubbed "La Máquina del Sabor" for its explosive rhythm section, powerful trombones, and energetic vocal delivery, Rumbankete comprises an international ensemble of musicians from Cuba, Venezuela, Colombia, El Salvador, Mexico, and the United States. They have performed alongside legendary artists such as Celia Cruz, Ruben Blades, Gilberto Santa Rosa, Diego El Cigala, Cachao, and Gustavo Dudamel, among others. 

Born in Havana, Cuba, Robert Rodriguez, known as Super DJ Robby, is considered one of the best salsa DJs in Los Angeles. He has performed with artists such as Oscar D’Leon, Los Van Van, Jose Alberto “El Canario”, Marc Anthony, Tito Nieves, and the late greats Celia Cruz and Tito Puente. His talent has also taken him to salsa festivals worldwide, with performances in Dubai, Zurich, Tokyo, Hong Kong, and more. 

Doors open for all Summer of Salsa events at 6pm with live music beginning at 7pm. Attendees are welcome to bring their own chairs and enjoy food and beverages available for purchase throughout the evening.  Everyone is encouraged to put on their dancing shoes and enjoy an incredible night filled with vibrant rhythms and infectious energy. This is a fantastic opportunity to experience the best salsa music in Los Angeles and dance the night away.
