The artist’s first museum solo exhibition features over 25 major works and opens with a Backyard BBQ Party celebration and the release of a new original biographic film
On view from July 14, 2024 through January 25, 2025
LOS ANGELES (June 27, 2024) — LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes presents the first museum exhibition of artist Jaime Muñoz, Jaime Muñoz: Truth Is A Moving Target. For the first time, Muñoz’s large-scale mixed media paintings and ink drawings will be exhibited in a comprehensive survey, exploring his works’ major themes and artistic evolution. The exhibition is on view from July 14, 2024 through January 25, 2025.
The exhibition highlights Muñoz’s investigation of modernity and labor alongside hidden narratives of a unique cultural experience–specifically the concepts of his Toyoteria and Blood Memory series.
“The inspiration for the exhibition’s title reflects that there are no prescriptive absolute ideas that define the work,” states Muñoz. “For me, it’s equally important for the audience to interpret the work for themselves.”
Bright and alluring colors come alive as selections of artworks, many not seen outside of private collections, retell the distinctive experiences of Muñoz’s Southern California upbringing. His experience as a laborer in the early part of his career greatly informed his artmaking, as seen in the pristine craftsmanship and precision of each work. The intriguing title, Truth Is A Moving Target, instigates the audience to delve further into the familiar, as logos, religious icons, and elements of nature tell a new story.
The exhibition is curated by Karen Crews Hendon, LA Plaza's Director of Exhibitions and Senior Curator.
“Jaime Muñoz’s voice and story bring a refreshing point of view to our shared landscape in contemporary art and culture,” shares Crews Hendon. “I’m excited to present an artist whose humility, sensitivity, and keen visual language highlights the imbalances in society and whose background and experiences speak to multiple generations, inspiring up-and-coming artists looking to be seen and heard.”
Community members can celebrate the opening of the exhibition during a free, family-friendly Backyard BBQ party on Sunday, July 14, from 3pm to 7pm with music by DJ Sonido Sapo featuring Sonido Sabotaje, live t-shirt silk screening, hands-on interactives, lawn games, and gallery activations with LA Plaza's volunteer program Les Navegantes. Plus, Tirzah’s Mexi-Terranean will prepare the carne asada! Link to event: https://shorturl.at/6ZdXd
